After making the first quilt I knew I wanted to make a quilt for Sam. I knew that I wanted it to be a Gees Bend Quilt. I love the history about Gees Bend, Alabama. I love the quilt maker because they used hat ever they could find to make a quilt. No set pattern, no fancy needle work, just a quilt to keep family members warm in the winter.
I went to the fabric store and picked out and handful of fat quarters. Came home and cut the into strips..all different widths. Then I just started sewing. With what i had left after squaring the center up I made the border. I used regular weight batting.
I cut the backing the width of a yard stick bigger than the quilt top. Lizzie, my Amish friend taught me how to finish a quilt without having to cut and sew a binding. I love it...quick and easy. I always wait and wash the quilts when they are complete. I like the way the fabric looks like it is used and well loved.
